Terms of use

The agreement between you and us about using Psalm Path. We have tried to write it in plain English, because terms nobody can read are not really terms anybody agreed to.

The short version

  • Most of Psalm Path is free, and there is no advertising. Psalm Path+ is an optional paid upgrade, bought through Apple. Scripture will never sit behind a payment, and neither will anything you have written.
  • What you write is yours. We claim no rights over your prayers or journal — and since it never reaches us, we could not use it even if we wanted to.
  • The app is not a church, a pastor, a therapist or a doctor. Please read the section on fasting and wellbeing; it matters.
  • Your data lives on your phone, which means keeping it safe — through backups and your device passcode — is ultimately in your hands.

1. This agreement

These terms apply between you and the maker of Psalm Path ("we", "us") and cover your use of the Psalm Path app and this website. By installing or using the app you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the app — and if you have already installed it, deleting it is the whole of what you need to do.

If you obtained the app from Apple's App Store, Apple's own terms also apply to that download, and this agreement is between you and us rather than with Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide support for Psalm Path.

2. Your licence to use the app

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use Psalm Path on devices you own or control, for your own use. You may use it as much as you like, for as long as you like.

You may not sell, rent or sub-license the app; copy it other than as your device does normally; or attempt to extract the content packaged inside it in order to republish it as your own work. That last point is about the effort involved in assembling and checking those texts, not about the texts themselves — most of them are in the public domain and you are free to obtain them from their original sources, as we did.

3. Cost

Psalm Path is free to download and contains no advertising. A substantial part of it is free outright and stays that way: all five Bible translations and the chapter audio, the Daily Walk, your prayer list, your journal and sermon notes, the devotional library, the museum artwork, twelve illustrated stories, thirty questions with their answers, three Atlas readings, saving and highlighting verses without limit, and exporting everything you have written.

Psalm Path+ is an optional paid upgrade that opens the remaining material. It is offered as a monthly subscription, an annual subscription (with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers), or a one-time purchase that does not expire. Current prices are shown in the app and on the App Store in your local currency, and are the prices that govern — anything quoted elsewhere is illustrative.

All purchases are made through Apple, not through us. Payment is charged to your Apple Account. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, and you manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings, not here. If you begin a free trial and then subscribe, any unused part of the trial is forfeited. Purchases are Family Sharing enabled. Refunds are handled by Apple under their terms; we cannot issue one, though we are glad to help you ask.

Two commitments about what may never be sold. First, Scripture will never be paywalled — no translation, no chapter, no recording, no search. Second, your own writing will never be paywalled: creating, editing, searching and exporting your journal, notes and prayers stays free whatever you have or have not bought, and no feature will ever be limited by a cap or a count on what you have written. Both are commitments made publicly on our convictions page and we consider them binding.

If something that is currently paid ever becomes free, you keep it. If we ever needed to change what is included in Psalm Path+, we would announce it before it happened rather than after, and a one-time purchase already made would continue to include what was added afterwards, as it says when you buy it.

4. Your content

Your prayers, journal entries, notes, highlights, voice recordings and everything else you create in Psalm Path belong entirely to you. We claim no ownership of them and no licence over them.

This is not merely a promise about our intentions. As set out in our privacy policy, that content is stored on your device and never transmitted to us, so we are not in a position to read, analyse, publish or train anything on it. There is no clause below that quietly takes a licence to your writing, because there is no mechanism by which we could exercise one.

The other side of that coin is that we cannot recover your content for you. We hold no copy. If you lose your phone without a backup, or delete the app without exporting first, that writing is gone and there is nothing we can do to bring it back. Please do keep backups.

5. Our content, and everyone else's

Psalm Path contains a lot of material that is not ours, and we have been careful about it. Our build process re-checks the rights on every text and image each time the app is assembled, and fails rather than including something we cannot account for.

  • Bible translations. The World English Bible, King James Version, American Standard Version, Berean Standard Bible and Bible in Basic English are all in the public domain or otherwise freely licensed for this use.
  • Devotional works. All nine are in the public domain by age.
  • Artwork. The paintings come from The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Open Access collection and are dedicated to the public domain under CC0.
  • Audio. Chapter recordings and hymns are public-domain recordings streamed from the Internet Archive and Wikimedia Commons.
  • Typefaces. Outfit and Source Serif 4 are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
  • The app's own writing — the study desk answers, the question bank, the Atlas readings, the book introductions, the stories, the walk reflections and the journal prompts — was drafted with AI assistance and ships as fixed text. It is verified rather than trusted: every Scripture reference is resolved against the bundled Bible before the app is built, every correct answer in the question bank must be supported by the text of one of its own citations, and a build fails rather than ship one that is not. Nothing is generated while you use the app; there is no model on your device and the app makes no request to one.
  • The imagery was AI-generated for this app rather than licensed from a photographer or a stock library. Nothing was taken from anyone's website or catalogue, no real person appears in it, and no one's likeness has been used. We do not assert copyright in an individual generated frame considered on its own, because machine-generated output has no human author; we do assert our rights in the selection, curation and arrangement of that imagery within the app, which is our work, and in the app as a whole.
  • Everything else — the design, the name and marks, the code, and the selection, arrangement and compilation of all the material above, including the work of assembling, checking and organising the public-domain texts — is ours, and is not licensed for reuse elsewhere.

The app's "What's in here" screen lists every item and its licence in full. If you believe something in Psalm Path infringes your rights, please write to us at the address below and we will look into it promptly and take it out if you are right.

6. How the app may be used

There is no community feature in Psalm Path — no posting, no messaging, no comments, nothing you write can reach another user — so the usual long list of prohibited behaviour has very little to attach to. What remains is simple: please do not attempt to break, reverse-engineer for redistribution, or interfere with the app or this website, and please do not use them for anything unlawful.

7. What Psalm Path is not

We built this app to move you toward the church, not to stand in for it, and we would rather say so here than let anyone be confused about it.

Psalm Path is not a church and is not pastoral care. It cannot pray with you in person, sit with you in grief, offer the sacraments, or know you. The study material and Bible notes are offered as help for reading, not as authoritative teaching; they were drafted with AI assistance, and while every reference in them is checked against the Bible text before shipping, they should be weighed rather than taken on trust. Where sincere Christians have long disagreed, the app tries to say so rather than pick for you. Please take real questions to your own church.

Psalm Path is not medical, psychological, legal or financial advice. Nothing in the app is a substitute for a qualified professional. If you are struggling with your mental health, please talk to a doctor or a trusted person rather than an app. If you are in crisis or in danger, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line right away — Psalm Path has no way to detect that anything is wrong and no way to summon help.

8. Fasting and your wellbeing

The app includes tools for fasting, and this deserves saying clearly rather than in small print.

Fasting is not safe for everyone. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are a child or adolescent, have diabetes or any condition affected by blood sugar, take medication with food, have a history of disordered eating, or are unwell or underweight, please speak to a doctor before fasting — and understand that for some people the right answer is not to fast at all. Fasting from food is a spiritual practice with real physical effects, and there are other practices, including fasting from screens, that carry none of that risk.

Psalm Path's fasting tools simply keep track of a fast you have decided on. They do not assess whether fasting is appropriate for you, cannot detect if it is harming you, and are not supervision. We have deliberately built them without targets, scores or any sense of failure, precisely so they are not something to push against — but the decision, and the responsibility for your own health, remain yours. Please stop and eat if you feel unwell.

9. Availability, and your data

Because Psalm Path runs on your phone rather than on our servers, it does not go down when we do. The features that need the internet — chapter audio, hymns, church search — depend on services we do not control, and may be slow or unavailable from time to time.

We may release updates, change features, or in principle stop developing the app. If we ever stopped, the copy on your phone would keep working as it is, and your data would still be yours and still be exportable, because none of it depends on us being there.

10. Warranties

We have built Psalm Path with real care, and we test it — but no software is perfect. The app and this website are provided "as is", without warranties of any kind beyond those that cannot lawfully be excluded. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any defect will be corrected, or that it will be compatible with every device.

We take particular care with the accuracy of Scripture text, but we do not warrant that every character of every translation, note or piece of study material is free of error. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.

11. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Your legal rights as a consumer are not affected by anything here.

Subject to that, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for loss of data (including any content you lose because you had no backup), or for loss arising from your reliance on the app for anything described in sections 7 and 8. Where liability cannot be excluded entirely, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of £50 and the amount you have paid for Psalm Path+ in the twelve months before the claim — which, if you have never bought it, is nothing.

12. Changes and ending

We may update these terms as the app changes. The date at the top will change when we do, and material changes will be described in the app rather than slipped in silently. Continuing to use Psalm Path after an update means you accept the revised terms.

You can end this agreement at any moment by deleting the app; there is nothing to cancel and no account to close. We may end it if you seriously breach these terms, though given there is no account to suspend, in practice this means we would ask you to stop using the app.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere and local consumer law gives you rights that cannot be set aside by an agreement like this one, those rights still apply to you and this clause does not take them away.
